TERRIFIC STORMS knocked out Net Control Station W1WCR’s main antenna system and propagation was poor, but the Liberty Net — amateur radio’s historic free speech net of four decades’ standing — continued as usual with more mind-expanding information than can ever be found on the commercial broadcasting bands. In fact, the Liberty Net alone is enough to justify the effort and expense of purchasing a shortwave radio and setting up an antenna system. And when the criminals in Congress are eventually ordered to shut down or censor the Internet, shortwave radio may well be the only way to freely communicate over wide areas.

Thanks to Marty, N2IRJ, you’re able to listen to the Liberty Net right now on your computer — or download the file and listen on your portable mp3 player. And N2SAG operates a live feed and chat during Net times that lets you make an end run around jammers and a fickle ionosphere.

Listen to or download this week's Liberty Net

Here are just a few of the many subjects of discussion and debate on this week’s Liberty Net recording:

• The census department’s so-called “American Community Survey” is intrusive and unconstitutional. The supreme law calls only for enumeration, nothing more. Americans are right to refuse to answer. (31 minutes)

• A Compton, California fraternity supposedly held a “ghetto party” and the usual suspects wrung their hands and cried “racism.” But, it turns out, a Black comedian with a sense of humor about his own people’s foibles was behind the whole affair. (46 minutes)

• A grassroots movement called “Unplug the Signal” asks the question: Are we being manipulated by the media to accept the elite’s “change” agenda through a false Hegelian dialectic — and visceral fear? (57 minutes)

• Why do neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have an industrial policy for this country? All we have are industries frantically re-domiciling outside the U.S. in an effort to escape the regulation- and tax-mad Washington regime. We should send a research team to Switzerland to see how they succeed in attracting industry: they have a population with high intelligence and genetic quality which leads to good schools, a clean environment, low taxes and regulations, and exceptionally clean and safe cities. (1 hour 30 minutes)

• A huge percentage of the so-called “stimulus” money goes directly to an unintelligent underclass which immediately spends it on landfill-bound Chinese junk at Wal-Mart or the equivalent — effectively a subsidy of the Chinese regime by American taxpayers. (1 hour 31 minutes)

• “Conservative” hucksters are trying to get viewers to buy the Iraqi occupation government’s “dinars” in hopes of making a killing once the war is over. It’s far more likely that the value of the occupiers’ paper will quickly trend to zero once the invaders leave. (1 hour 36 minutes)

• The NAACP has given an award to self-described Communist Van Jones, calling him “an American treasure” and “the most misunderstood man” in this country. (1 hour 56 minutes)

• Historically, numerous African tribal kingdoms captured members of other tribes — or their own undesirables — and stored them in barracks near the coast to facilitate easy access and higher sales to slave traders. (2 hours 0 minutes)

• Should the scientists who falsified data to support governmental climate change “solutions” be prosecuted? (3 hours o minutes)

Even though the storms in New Hampshire caused W1WCR’s main antenna support to come down, his array of verticals was not damaged. Propagation for short and medium distances was poor, but the long skip brought a check-in from Panama. It’s worth listening through the tough spots and the weaker signals to get the interesting and uncensored content.

Remember that the Liberty Net is a free speech discussion net. No one, myself and the regular participants included, agrees with everything said by everyone there — that would be absurd and impossible. Any licensed amateur station who brings courtesy and proper operating to the frequency is welcome to participate.

This week’s recording is 3 hours 54 minutes in length and about 80 Megabytes in size. The discussion portion of the Net begins at about the 22 minute mark. Listen to the Liberty Net every Saturday night — within 10 kHz or so of 3950 SSB, starting at 10PM Eastern Time.

Our thanks go to W1WCR for his hard work and courage in keeping an important part of the amateur radio service alive since 1974!

THANKS TO an anonymous listener and the Audio Vault at amfone.net, we now have a audio clip of my AM station, recorded while I living in Rochester, Minnesota in 1996.

At the time I was running my highly modified Kenwood TS-440s on 75 meters into an Alpha 77D at about 300 Watts into a 150′ inverted L antenna that just barely fit into my small city lot. (All that gear is now gone — stolen from me along with nearly everything else I owned.)

The signal isn’t bad considering that it was presumably heard a thousand miles away on the East Coast. You can hear the recordist adjusting the bandwidth (sounds much better in the wide mode) during the segment. I’m discoursing on ‘AM-ology,’ a field which certainly deserves further study!

YEARS AGO I joked that the next niche radio format to be attempted would be continuous bird calls. I never imagined that it could actually happen, but it has, and the results are quite pleasant.

Apparently one of the Digital Audio Broadcast channels in Great Britain (yes, they have real over-the-air digital radio in the UK, not the dysfunctional “HD Radio” that the media moguls forced on this country) started broadcasting ambient bird calls and other natural forest sounds about a year ago, and it developed quite a following. (I have no idea if the station’s creator, Quentin Howard, ever heard of my decades-old suggestion or not.)

But the station has been axed by channel owner DigitalOne (a British quasi-governmental digital radio monopoly) and replaced by something described as “Amazing Radio, playing rock, indie, urban and jazz tunes,” according to the UK’s Independent newspaper. Ho hum.

Birdsong Radio began by broadcasting a 20-minute loop of chirps and tweets originally recorded for a stage play sound effect in 1991 at Howard’s home garden in West Lavington, Wiltshire. You can still hear that original loop at http://radiobirdsong.com where station supporters have built a home on the Web. Another group of birdsong lovers has built an even more elaborate online station, http://www.birdsongradio.com/ with superb fidelity and a larger variety of recordings.

Howard says of the over-the-air station’s cancellation “I think it’s a bit of a stunt to get attention for the new radio station because there’s enough empty slots on digital radio for both. There’s a lot of very cross people out there.”

I find Birdsong Radio a delightful change from conventional radio, and its outdoors ambience will be augmenting the aural atmosphere of my office often in the future.

IONOSPHERIC PROPAGATION was wildly inconsistent this week and there was some receiver overload from a nearby CW contester, but the weekly Liberty Net current events discussion was as free-spirited and informative as always. The jammers that plagued the Net last week, probably disappointed by their inability to disrupt the proceedings, seem to have given up. Here are a just a few of the many topics brought up on the latest Liberty Net:

Listen to or download this week's Liberty Net

• The tragic intentional plane crash by Andrew Stack, a victim of the IRS, is just the tip of the iceberg — many good, hard-working, honest Americans have committed suicide because of abuse by the IRS. There are hundreds of other, more honest, less intrusive ways of financing needed public functions. It’s time to abolish the income tax. (22 minutes)

• What was the motivation of the Ohio man who, besieged by banks and creditors and tax collectors, decided to bulldoze his own beautiful house? (37 minutes)

• With the massive infusion of created “money,” will the American economy experience inflation higher than the 16% that some are predicting? (45 minutes)

• There’s no need for cable or satellite pay television now that the Web has sites like justin.tv (52 minutes)

• Will Tea Party enthusiasts reject the establishment “conservatives” (like Dick Armey and John McCain) who are attempting to muscle their way into control of that grassroots liberty movement? (59 minutes)

• Will commissars from the European Union now be dictating new taxes and laws for Greeks — effectively taking away their sovereignty? (1 hour 22 minutes)

• Why was George Soros badmouthing investment in gold at the very same time he was buying it? (1 hour 32 minutes)

• Many of the nicest people on amateur radio are those who operate in the amplitude modulation (AM) mode. (1 hour 35 minutes)

• No one could have predicted that East Germany’s once all-powerful secret police organization, the Stasi, could have been overthrown in a few hours by an aroused populace — but it was. Will the same things happen to the modern American versions of the Stasi, the IRS and other branches of the regime in Washington? (2 hours 10 minutes)

• The Washington regime is telling Social Security retirees that the inflation rate is now negative, so no Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) will be given to them this year. But at the very same time Congress granted itself a 9% COLA! (2 hours 31 minutes)

• Was former Congressman Jim Traficant railroaded into federal prison on false charges because he was telling the truth, as was Liberty Net participant Kevin Strom? He can now tell his own story on the radio and the Internet. (3 hours 10 minutes)

• The reign of Jack Welch at GE was not at all like it has been presented to the public; there were many shady practices and insider deals that hurt both shareholders and the American public. (4 hours 30 minutes)

This week’s audio file size is about 114 MB, with a total length of 5 hours 34 minutes.

The Liberty Net is one of the longest-running nets in amateur radio history, and is certainly the most exciting discussion net in existence. If you’re an amateur operator, feel free to join in — and, license or not, join in on N2SAG’s live chat during Net hours.

Remember that you can receive the Liberty Net on the nearest clear frequency to 3950 kHz every Saturday night at 10PM Eastern Time, or listen live on the Internet via N2SAG or N2IRJ, or listen at your leisure — on your computer or mp3 player — via the downloadable audio files posted here at http://3950.net every week.

Once again, thanks to W1WCR for his superb work as Net Control Station, and to N2IRJ for his excellent receiving and recording efforts.

THE AM-864/U broadcast peak limiter, which I purchased “new surplus” from John Meshna and Company in about 1974, was my first foray into true broadcast audio processing for amateur radio. Like my TCS transmitter purchase from them, the unit was beautiful and flawless out of the box. It cost me $35. I sold it in the 90s (probably a mistake) for about $100. It now has acquired a “reputation” in the recording industry, and good ones sell for over a thousand dollars.

It’s 600 ohms transformer-coupled balanced in and out, with a simple all-vacuum-tube and all-balanced audio amplifier and peak rectification and gain reduction circuit. It was built in the 1950s by the Federal Television Corporation (some were built by other contractors, I am told) for use in AM and shortwave transmitters run by AFRTS, the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. It came with a manual, the most hilarious aspect of which was its instructions on how to destroy it (“use axes, knives, machetes, flamethrowers, incendiary grenades” etc.) in case it fell into “enemy hands.”

AM-864/U destruction instructions, from the operator's manual (click for the full-size image). And yes, the "enemy us" typo is in the original!

I modified it for adjustable release time (a faster release was often desirable for amateur voice, even relatively high fidelity voice, to increase audio density) and improved low frequency response. The AM-864/U imparts an airy, floating quality to the audio, and gives the impression of emphasizing the upper midrange. It doesn’t control peaks as well as a CBS Labs Volumax or a Gates FET peak limiter, but it’s quite usable.

At that time, my main transmitter was a Hallicrafters BC-610E (a 250TH final modulated by a pair of 100THs). I used a UTC Linear Standard hi-fi push-pull-plates to speaker transformer hooked up backwards to drive the grids of the 100THs and the Linear Standard was driven through a resistive loading pad by a Knight high fidelity amplifier using a pair of EL34s and negative feedback from the modulated B+ of the BC-610. It was clean audio. The AM-864 was fed by my Shure 556S microphone into a Heathkit tube-type cathode follower preamp/tone control and the AM-864 fed the Knight hi-fi amp.

I used this setup for several years and it was what I was using when I made the AM amateur bulletin transmissions in 1977 to build opposition to FCC docket 20777 (which would have effectively eliminated AM and other experimental modes). I know where some of that old gear went (everything I still had in my possession in 2006 was stolen by my then-wife in complicity with the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force), but I do wonder who is using my old AM-864 now.

THE LIBERTY NET was attacked by multiple jammers this week — stations purposely transmitting sound effects and unidentified rude remarks and obscenities — but, despite all the efforts of the would-be censors, the Net participants brought off one of the most interesting and thought-provoking discussions yet.

Listen to or download this week's Liberty Net

Jammers are less effective than ever, because listeners have multiple ways of hearing the Net these days: They can listen on their own receivers, or, by logging in to N2SAG’s Stickam site, listen to N2SAG’s or KC0OW’s receivers (or others that are sometimes available), or tune in via N2IRJ’s feed which is also recorded and archived here. With multiple receivers hundreds of miles apart — some with steerable-null antenna arrays — it’s possible to minimize any intentional interference. Furthermore, N2SAG is building an e-list of monitoring stations which he’ll be coordinating when the jammers are on the air. Using triangulation and propagation clues, along with the technical and behavior “signatures” of the jammers, many will be identified and removed from the air. Listen to the Net for more details.

The Liberty Net is the longest-running current events discussion net on amateur radio, and is one of the most venerable gatherings of amateurs on the air. It’s a bastion of free speech and free inquiry. Here are just a few of the topics discussed this week:

• It’s crazy for people to state, as some media “conservatives” have, that they “miss Bush.” Obama is just Bush on steroids. You can’t cure out-of-control spending and borrowing with more out-of-control spending and borrowing. (21 minutes)

• The SPLC probably won’t be making an anti-White cause celebre out of the shooter at the University of Alabama: she is Jewish and the SPLC, though it pretends otherwise, is not objective in such matters. Gun bans at universities, by the way, make it almost impossible to stop such crazies. (27 minutes)

• Goldman Sachs has colluded with corrupt elements in the Greek government to conceal the true extent of that government’s debt, in a scam that could devastate the European Union. (47 minutes)

• The “Patriot Act” was written in advance of the 9/11 attacks, which may well have been a false flag operation designed to destroy the U.S. Constitution. (1 hour 17 minutes)

• Could the policies of Japan and Switzerland — both favor closed borders and racial integrity — be the reason that these two countries are now under covert financial attack by the U.S.? (1 hour 21 minutes)

• Have the British people lost their will and initiative? Some say they are now a “people with a broken back.” (1 hour 49 minutes)

• The answer to high technology “traffic surveillance cameras” is a very old technology — the grappling hook. (1 hour 50 minutes)

• Why does the alleged Obama birth certificate released during the election utilize a font that did not exist at the time the certificate was allegedly printed? (1 hour 54 minutes)

• The current “hate Iran” foreign policy is totally insane. (2 hours 8 minutes)

• Iran is enriching uranium while the United States is enriching Goldman Sachs. (2 hours 12 minutes)

• The Liberty Net has met on or near 3950 kHz every Saturday night for the last 36 years. (2 hours 25 minutes)

• The Israel cult — whose devotees are Zionists and Christian Zionists — is one of the greatest threats to the United States. (3 hours 24 minutes)

This week’s audio file size is about 143 MB, with a total length of seven hours. The times listed are measured from the beginning of this week’s recording.

Remember that you can receive the weekly Liberty Net on the nearest clear frequency to 3950 kHz every Saturday night at 10PM Eastern Time, or listen live on the Internet via N2SAG or N2IRJ, or listen at your leisure — on your computer or mp3 player — via the downloadable audio files posted here at http://3950.net every week.

Once again, thanks to W1WCR for his excellent work as Net Control Station, and to N2IRJ for his superb receiving and recording efforts.

RECENTLY I was listening to WA1HLR use his modified Navy TCS transmitter on 75 meters, and it brought back memories of my early days on the amateur bands. In 1972 I bought a World War II surplus Navy TCS transmitter, built by Collins, from military surplus dealer John Meshna, via mail order.

The transmitter looked shiny and almost new when it came out of its thick, multi-layer wooden packing crate — which I believe was also a 1940s original. It had that odd smell that electronics of that era often had — something to do with the anti-mildew “tropicalization” coating they were given, which also gave them a vaguely green sheen when seen at certain angles.

The TCS needed a power supply and control panel, which I built myself from parts scrounged from old radios and television sets and purchased at Arcade Electronics in Annandale, Virginia. The stock audio quality was not too good — strictly carbon-mike variety — so I ventured some modifications and soon had it sounding decent into my light bulb dummy load. But that was just an experiment.

Having only a Novice license at the time, my first goal was to get it on the air on CW. It wasn’t designed well for that mode, to say the least: multiple relays keyed multiple stages at once, including the free-running oscillator, clunking loudly and clicking and chirping like crazy on the air. Ultimately it would prove to be easier to get my Viking Valiant on CW than bother with totally redesigning the TCS. So my first rig was eventually consigned to carrier-current AM duties (feeding a reduced power signal into the AC power line, like many college radio stations used to do), so I could send my shortwave receiver’s (or my Wollensak reel-to-reel deck’s) audio around the house and the neighborhood to any AM-band radio while I did chores or mowed the lawn. That was fun.

But that isn’t what I remember most about the TCS transmitter. My most lasting memory of it is the front-panel nut-and-bolt RF output terminal, which was right next to the output tank coupling knob. It was almost impossible to tune the transmitter without getting RF burns on your knuckles. That feeling — and the aroma that went with it — is something I am unlikely to forget.

THIS WEEK the longest-running current events discussion net on Amateur Radio, the weekly Liberty Net, took place on its 3950 kHz LSB nominal frequency — though most weeks, interference, some of it intentional, forces the Net to be frequency-agile, usually within 10 kHz or less. Here are a few highlights from the free-swinging discussions that took place:

Listen to or download this week's Liberty Net

• Obama has now publicly stated that Americans “should not be questioning” his citizenship. (25 minutes)

• Armed Haitian gangs continue to terrorize the island, including one attack on a UN aid convoy. Similar attacks take place regularly in sub-Saharan Africa and in areas of the U.S. where Haitians have immigrated in significant numbers. Also, cock-fighting and Voodoo remain strong presences on the island, as is the folk belief in the “Loup garou,” the possessed who kidnap and eat children; many accused of being “Loup garous” have been killed. (In France, the “Loup garou” is an old myth, like vampires are to us — but millions of Haitians not only believe in such things, but kill to “protect themselves” from them.) (27 minutes)

• Why did the power structure which got the boobs whipped up to pull the levers for Obama pick such a person, whose background and even citizenship is highly questionable? Answer: he is blackmailable. The power structure always wants a back-door way to get rid of its puppets in case they get out of control, and Obama is no exception. (52 minutes)

• Who are Obama’s handlers and controllers? Rahm Emanuel is one. (1 hour 7 minutes)

• False flag operations have changed history — think of the Gulf of Tonkin, Pearl harbor, and 9/11. Consciousness of this fact is spreading, and it is Glenn Beck’s job to co-opt and squelch this consciousness. (1 hour 16 minutes)

• Will Obama play the “war card” and bomb Iran just to boost his poll numbers and his standing with the pro-Zionist media? Amazingly, National Review is advocating that he do so, almost in these very words. (1 hour 18 minutes)

• Is the exaggeration of Toyota’s brake and accelerator defects a plot to make way for the Chinese cars that are currently being backed by Warren Buffet and GM? (1 hour 30 minutes)

• The “Obamacare” health plan in all its incarnations constitutes a huge transfer of wealth from Whites to non-Whites. This is part of a two-pronged political strategy: the other part is to grant amnesty and voting rights to illegal immigrants. Democrats crassly believe that this will guarantee their political ascendancy in perpetuity. (1 hour 39 minutes)

• The brand-new “Rosa Parks Transit Center” in Detroit is now closed for a large part of every day because of the rampant crime and filth that quickly take over almost every public facility in that city. (1 hour 54 minutes)

• What can Americans do to help their families and their neighborhoods survive the coming economic hard times? Beware: those living near America’s big cities may not survive marauding Third World gangs. (3 hours 5 minutes)

• America lost a great patriot and the English-speaking world lost a great writer and investigator when Eustace Mullins died this week. (3 hours 21 minutes)

Net discussions begin at about the 18 minute point, and the audio file is about 119 MB in size, 5 hours 49 minutes in length.

Remember that you can receive the Liberty Net on the nearest clear frequency to 3950 kHz every Saturday night at 10PM Eastern Time, or listen live on the Internet via N2SAG (who also includes a lively chat room during Net hours) or N2IRJ (whose delayed feeds also run throughout the week), or listen at your leisure via the mp3 files posted here at http://3950.net every week.

Once again, thanks to W1WCR for running this extraordinary net, and to N2IRJ for making these recordings available.

THE YEAR WAS 1973. It was my first hamfest. I was so young I didn’t have a driver’s license and my mother drove me to Gaithersburg that crisp October morning. I met WA3PUN, Ed Bolton, there. He was one of the AM amateur operators that I’d just started talking with on 75 meters. And I made my very first hamfest purchase — a shiny new-looking 1950s military surplus receiver, a Collins R-395, part of the PRD-1 direction finding set.

Now I notice, thanks to the Declan McCullagh photography site, that an R-395 that looks exactly like the one I bought and added to my Viking Valiant / BC-610 / DX-150A HF station is now enshrined as an exhibit in the National Cryptologic Museum in Laurel, Maryland. Time passes, and what was once just an old yet interesting receiver is now a notable part of history.

DESPITE CHALLENGES, like changing propagation that brought inadvertent conflict with another net, and intentional (and illegal) jamming from would-be censors, W1WCR’s free speech current events discussion net, the Liberty Net, did itself proud once again this week, with information and analysis of the news that you simply can’t get anywhere else.

Here are just a few of the topics discussed this week (times are from the beginning of the recording):

Listen to or download this week's Liberty Net

• Obama, who looks increasingly like a one-term president, gives everything to the bankers and nothing to the small businessman. (32 minutes)

• A Liberty Net member announces his support for the NAACP in their lawsuit based on lack of enforcement when it comes to Mestizo gangs attacking Black families. Why are no White Americans doing this? — we are victims of these gangs too. Where are the mainstream “conservative” pundits like Glenn Beck and Alex Jones? Why are they silent on this issue? (59 minutes)

• A corporation — Murray Hill, Inc. — is actually running for Congress, as a protest against the Supreme Court’s bizarre ruling that corporations are “persons” with the “right” to spend as much money as they want to buy politicians. (1 hour 4 minutes and also 2 hours 9 minutes)

• There is now not enough money in existence to to pay back the debt of the U.S. government. Will the Chinese — who hold much of that debt — find a way to “foreclose”? (1 hour 16 minutes)

• When “Russian” and “American” oligarchs (most of whom are not ethnically Russian or American) get in trouble, they often “make Aliyah” and find refuge in Israel. This trail of billionaire criminality is a major conduit for stolen American technology. (1 hour 34 minutes)

• Is Narcissism — such as that obviously displayed by Barack Obama — caused by Mama’s Boy Syndrome (the lack of a strong, responsible male in the household)? How dangerous are such people? How are they used by the power structure? (1 hour 36 minutes)

• Are corporations — even foreign ones — “human beings” who can participate, with their billions, in the political process? The current Supreme Court says they are. (2 hours 36 minutes)

• Is Osama bin Laden a signatory to the latest global warming resolution? (2 hours 43 minutes)

• Was Microsoft involved in developing the software which the government of China uses to censor the Internet? Are the oligarchs who rule us — or their servants in the regime in Washington — planning to do the same thing to us? (2 hours 15 minutes)

• Did Indonesia send a statue of a “monkey god” to Barack Obama as a “good luck” totem? (2 hours 29 minutes)

• Freedom-lovers have made their way into the public consciousness with their Tea Parties. But what’s next? How about a National Strike? (2 hours 49 minutes)

• One hopes that the Tea Party movement stays out of the clutches of establishment hacks like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. (2 hours 50 minutes)

• Is Microsoft purposely making older programs — like Word 2000 — unstable on the newer operating systems, to force users to purchase the latest versions? (2 hours 56 minutes)

• Which has the worst and most corrupt state government — Illinois, California, or North Carolina? (3 hours 14 minutes)

• Should bankers and lawyers be forbidden to hold public office? (3 hours 18 minutes)

• Should the illegal Federal Reserve and its banker shareholders be waterboarded? (3 hours 33 minutes)

• Patriots should view the old Errol Flynn movie Captain Blood. The message in it is appropriate for these times: The day will come when the worm will turn and those forced to row under the whip will take power — and then the bankers and their politicians will fear for their lives. (3 hours 46 minutes)

• The inside story of the cover-up of the John Edwards love-child affair is shocking — and shows the total corruption at the highest levels of American politics. (3 hours 57 minutes)

• As the schools catastrophically fail, an increasingly incompetent education establishment repeats “Afrocentric” mantras to “boost the self-esteem” of Black students — while White students are abandoned and left totally out in the cold. If you are a teacher, to even criticize this situation leads to a loss of employment. (5 hours 5 minutes)

• There is now a nutritional supplement that can reverse age-related vision problems. (5 hours 42 minutes)

Net discussions begin at about the 13-minute point and the total length of the recording is 7 hours 25 minutes.

The participants on the Liberty Net are independent voices. They have no commercial, corporate, or partisan axe to grind — unlike the paid shills of the Democrat/Republican axis on Fox News or CNN. You can listen in — or take part, if you have an amateur radio license — on or near 3950 kHz every Saturday night starting at 10PM Eastern Time and lasting until well into the wee hours of the morning. If you don’t have a good quality shortwave radio, you can tune in live via N2SAG (and participate in live chat that is often relayed over the air) at http://stickam.com/thelibertynet. Or you can listen to delayed feeds via N2IRJ — or download the Net every week right here at http://3950.net .
