W1WCR, 1929-2021

The co-founder of the Liberty Net in 1974, the regular Net Control Station for the Liberty Net for 45 years, and a great fighter for freedom of speech on the amateur airwaves, Victor Misek, PE, of Hudson, New Hampshire, died on Saturday, 12 June 2021, shortly after receiving the COVID vaccine. He had been suffering from sarcopenia for the last two years. He was a staunch believer in advanced life extension protocols and lived a full and profoundly productive life for almost 92 years. He first QSOed with Kevin, WB4AIO on the Liberty Net in 1978, and worked closely with Kevin (recording the Net, documenting jammer activity, doing interviews, and other projects) from 1987 until his final days, doing his last on-air interview/QSO with Kevin in 2021.

Victor was a lifelong supporter of racial-nationalism and a staunch opponent of the conversion of America into a non-White country. He was also an opponent of the Israeli and other Middle Eastern meddling in American politics, and the foreign wars that resulted. His motto, which he promoted extensively on the Liberty Net, was “Get America out of the Middle East, and get the Middle East out of America.”

When certain malicious operators and government thugs tried to smear WB4AIO, Vic responded with an open letter including the following statement:

I am Victor Misek, a retired professional engineer in the state of New Hampshire and holder of Amateur Extra radio license W1WCR. I am the author of the Beverage Antenna Handbook (copyright 1977, 1987 and 1997, first second and third editions) and have been registered as a professional engineer in Ohio and New Hampshire. My inventions appear in 19 US Patents. For many years I held a Top Secret clearance granted by the FBI because of my work on Electronic Countermeasure Systems. My ECM work was done at Sanders Associates, Inc. starting in 1955.

I have known Kevin Alfred Strom, WB4AIO, since 1987, and have interacted with him both on and off the air innumerable times since then. He, his fiancée, and his children have been guests in my home.

He has provided technical and other support for a amateur radio net, the Liberty Net, of which I am the Net Control Station, for many years, setting up a Web page, news blog, interactive chat room, phone patch system, and online streaming services for the net, which allowed amateur radio operators who were hospitalized or disabled or otherwise prevented from normal on-air participation to hear, enjoy, and take part in the Net. He has been unrelenting in helping other amateur radio operators use these facilities, not only with no personal remuneration but at evidently quite substantial cost to him both in time and money. He has also served as volunteer NCS for the Net and other nets when the regular NCS was unavailable.

He has also, without compensation of any kind, helped me by recovering the composition files of the book I authored, The Beverage Antenna Handbook, from an obsolete computer file system and converting them to modern PDF files, so that the book will continue to be available to future generations.

In all of my dealings and associations with Mr. Strom over a period of 30 years, both on and off the air, he has shown himself to be a man of utmost integrity and truthfulness.

When Marty, N2IRJ, began a dishonorable campaign to ban WB4AIO from the Liberty Net, Vic strongly disapproved of and opposed Marty’s banning efforts and behind-the-scenes slander campaign, saying in a 17 May 2020 email posted to KA2PTE’s Liberty Net email discussion list:

“There are evil people out to smear Kevin. Fake News isn’t just about Trump. Ban the Kevin-haters if you want to test your banning skills…. V.”

And that just about says all that needs to be said on that topic!

In his early years at Case Western Reserve University, Vic worked his way through school as a broadcast engineer at 50,000-Watt clear channel AM station WGAR in Cleveland, Ohio. Victor was a PhD-level engineer, and held patents for 19 inventions granted from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. He was also the author of the ground-breaking Beverage Antenna Handbook for radio amateurs and corresponded with Harold Beverage himself in relation to his research.

He always had a commanding signal on 160 and 75 meters — a real asset for a Net Control Station. He used homebrew large-conductor (8 ga.) 1000-ohm open wire line and a homebrew tuner, feeding a 165-foot doublet at approximately 90 to 100 feet above sloping ground, under which he had constructed an extensive copper ground screen to reduce earth losses. The result was a continent-spanning signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Victor was not only a near-genius, but he was a truly kind man, and welcomed me and my wife and family into his home on numerous occasions.

Ave Victor, you will never be forgotten!

Look up WB4AIO on QRZ.com? — try a better alternative.

QRZ.COM has banned and censored many people for their political views (for years, KV4FZ was one and there have been lots more, including me) and in my opinion for that reason shouldn’t be supported by amateur radio operators. Sometimes they even lock an operator’s page so he can’t update his information, causing readers to get outdated information. This is intentional, downright malicious — and petty.

So, if you want to look up WB4AIO on QRZ.com, instead look him up on the much better QRZCQ.com. Check it out, and while you’re there, register and make them your new replacement for QRZ.com.

They even help shortwave listeners (SWLs) interact with amateur operators, allowing SWLs to register their own custom SWL callsigns and create a page on the QRZ lookup database, so others can find out more about their listening stations.

The folks there have so many features on their site that I haven’t even explored them all yet. QRZ.com deserves to be abandoned; let’s all register and switch to QRZCQ today!

And here’s the better, non-censored callsign database that thousands, including WB4AIO, are using to replace QRZ.com.

THE FCC is an instrumentality of the regime in Washington, with all of the callousness, hostility, incompetence, political motivations, and evil that that necessarily entails. They have a new tactic they are using on some licensees of whom they disapprove of or who are Politically Incorrect. They won’t begin proceedings against such a licensee — because they know they’d lose in any fair hearing.

So what the FCC does instead is simply to ignore the licensee and fail to perform their duties with respect to him: When he submits an address change, they won’t process it. When he passes the test for a higher grade of license, they won’t acknowledge it and will not put it in their database. When he renews his license, they will not process it and it will look like the license is expired in their database — even though it’s not expired at all. They act like the licensee doesn’t even exist and will not respond to his inquiries in any meaningful manner. I know this because it’s exactly what’s happening to me.

When the agency that’s supposed to facilitate orderly, lawful communications in this country acts in such a lawless, arbitrary, and immoral manner, what is an honorable man supposed to do? The very first and minimum response of an honorable man should be to regard the agency as the lawbreaker — and the licensee who has followed the spirit of the law as the innocent party — in any conflict between the two.

Here’s a small selection from among the thoughts brought out on this week’s Liberty Net, along with my remarks:

• The murder and violent assault rate in African-populated Chicago keeps accelerating: In one weekend alone, 50 Congoids were gunned down by fellow Blacks there. Such carnage in Chicago (and in many other large cities where Negroes dominate) barely makes the news. Yet the comparatively rare instance of a Black being killed by a White policeman becomes a national news event in the Jewish-controlled media for months on end — and an excuse for violent rioting, complete with Soros funding. IT’S LIGHTNING season. There are many methods of protecting your station from nearby strikes (nothing can protect it from a direct hit). One method used here at WB4AIO is this: I use open wire feedline. Where it enters my home, the two balanced-feedline wires pass through the wall by going through through two narrow plastic tubes just a little bit wider than the wires themselves.

Just about an inch or so outside the wall, each wire of the feedline is connected via a Powerpole quick-disconnect connector. When a storm is approaching, I just walk out to the back of the house, disconnect the feedline, and toss it ten or 15 feet away from the house. (This is also done when mowing the lawn, so the feedline is out of the way and out of danger.)

There’s no better way of keeping a lightning-induced spike on the antenna from entering my equipment than by having that antenna’s feedline a dozen feet from the house!

Another thing I do is keep a 2-Watt 22 Megohm high voltage resistor connected across the open wire feedline at all times. This absorbs practically no desired RF, but effectively prevents DC static charges from building up across the antenna’s feed system during precipitation or storms. Such DC buildup can sometimes cause loud popping sounds in your receiver called “precipitation static” — or even cause arcing when a passing storm front brings a large atmospheric voltage gradient along with it. With the resistor paralleling the feedline, any such charge is bled off before it can cause any problems.

Here’s a brief summary of — and my comment on — some of the issues discussed on the net this week:

• A terrorist attack in Belgium (by a non-White, natch, who had recently slithered in from Morocco) was recently thwarted by three brave men who took matters into their own hands. But there is a much better solution: No non-Whites should be permitted in White countries; problem solved. (10 minutes)

SOMETHING THAT both amateurs and SWLs should consider is the purchase of a software-defined radio (or SDR). An SDR consists of a direct-conversion mixer, or direct analogue-to-digital converter, coupled to software which can manipulate the digitized stream of ones and zeros perfectly representing the RF waveforms — and give you mathematically perfect demodulation (or modulation) of any mode: SSB, CW, AM, DSB, et cetera — without any of the noise and distortion buildup inevitable in conventional transceivers. Receiving on an SDR has been described as like having a film peeled off your eyes and perceiving reality clearly for the first time. Transmitting is equally clean. On top of that, the dynamic range and perfectly-rectangular filters are excellent. Filter edges can be dragged with your mouse, too, so you can have perfect high fidelity wideband audio, or narrow DX filtration, depending on what you want at any given moment. Good units are available from Anan, Flexradio Systems, Perseus, and many others.

OPEN-WIRE BALANCED line is far superior to coaxial cable as far as loss is concerned — especially when the SWR between the line and your antenna is high. But what do you do when you want to feed an unbalanced antenna — like a vertical or inverted L — with balanced line? Conventional wisdom says it can’t be done. But it can. I developed a system using two current baluns and a conventional T-network antenna coupler which allows open-wire feed of my 150′ elevated-radial inverted L antenna. I can go on any frequency from 1.8 to 30 MHz with a perfect match and low loss, and tune the system in the shack. Write if you want to know more!

Here’s my summary of and commentary on some of the concepts brought forth on the Liberty Net this session:

• To “prove” that Donald Trump was wrong about illegal immigrant criminals, one media talking head recently opined that “most of the FBI Ten Most Wanted are White people.” But upon looking closer, you’ll discover that eight of the ten are actually Mestizos from Central America, which the regime’s FBI falsely categorizes as White. (18 minutes)

• Since they want to misclassify Mestizos as Whites, maybe Whites should sign up for race-based preferences and benefits by checking the “Hispanic” box on government and employment forms. (23 minutes)
